Tanzania’s Ujamaa Community Resource Team has helped communities secure rights to more than 2 million hectares. They have also helped communities generate over $4 million in village revenues from carbon credits and tourism in their working villages to date.

UCRT works to secure land and resource rights for indigenous and local communities across northern Tanzania. Their innovative approach combines legal advocacy with practical support to help communities secure and manage their traditional lands.

The organization implements comprehensive programs including: land rights securing; community-based natural resource management; sustainable rangeland management; and enterprise development. Their work emphasizes strengthening traditional institutions while building local capacity for effective resource management.

Over two decades of operation, UCRT has helped secure over 900,000 hectares of land for local communities, strengthened numerous traditional management institutions, and developed successful models for combining land rights with conservation. Their work has demonstrated how securing community land rights can drive effective conservation outcomes.

Maliasili exists to help talented local conservation organizations overcome their challenges and constraints so that they can become more effective agents of change in their landscapes, communities, and nations.
