Maliasili believes robust financial management is mission critical. We strive to support our impact while minimizing risk by cultivating long-term, meaningful relationships with our funding partners; proactively managing our financial assets; and ensuring efficient, optimized use of resources - balancing efficiency with effectiveness. We believe that transparency builds integrity and welcome inquiries into our financial management practices.
In 2017, Maliasili applied to the IRS to modify our tax status from a Private Foundation to a Public Charity. The IRS provided us with a provisional status whereby we were considered a public charity until the completion of our review period in 2022. We successfully completed our review period and received notification from the IRS in 2023 that our charitable tax status was no longer provisional but granted. During our review period, we were required to continue submitting Form 990-PF until 2023 when we filed our first Form 990.

2024: Expanding Impact for
People and Nature

This year, we deepened our commitment to strengthening Africa’s locally-led conservation movement, expanding our network to 54 exceptional partners across 16 countries. Together, we are tackling some of the world’s most pressing challenges—biodiversity loss, climate change, and community resilience—on a transformative scale.
Maliasili exists to help talented local conservation organizations overcome their challenges and constraints so that they can become more effective agents of change in their landscapes, communities, and nations.
