Tsavo Trust works across much of the 40,000 km2 Tsavo Conservation Area, Kenya’s largest wildlife landscape, home to nearly 16,000 elephants. In 2024, they recorded a 5.6% increase in the black rhino population, which has contributed to the long-term recovery of the species in Kenya from only 250 in 1989 to over 1,100 today. They also note a 74% reduction in bushmeat poaching incidents in Tsavo, and a 80% reduction in human elephant conflict in several community sites.

Tsavo Trust works to protect one of Africa’s largest elephant populations and their habitat in Kenya’s Greater Tsavo ecosystem. Their integrated approach combines wildlife protection with community development to ensure the long-term survival of both elephants and local communities.

The organization implements comprehensive programs including: aerial and ground-based wildlife monitoring; anti-poaching support; human-wildlife conflict mitigation; and community development initiatives. Their unique aerial program provides crucial support for protection efforts across this vast landscape while their community work helps build local support for conservation.

Since its establishment, Tsavo Trust has contributed significantly to reducing poaching, protecting critical wildlife corridors, and improving community livelihoods across the Greater Tsavo ecosystem. Their work has helped maintain one of Africa’s most important elephant populations while supporting sustainable development in surrounding communities.

Maliasili exists to help talented local conservation organizations overcome their challenges and constraints so that they can become more effective agents of change in their landscapes, communities, and nations.
