The NACSO and Ministry of Environment annual State of Community Conservation Report for 2023 provides an overview of Namibia’s community conservation efforts and impact. Across the country, 86 communal conservancies, 47 community forests, and 20 fisheries reserves cover roughly 20% of the country’s total land area. Conservancies and other areas generated $5 million in income and 2,340 jobs for conservancy residents.

NACSO serves as the umbrella organization for Namibia’s community-based natural resource management (CBNRM) program, coordinating support to the country’s communal conservancies. Their work helps maintain one of Africa’s most successful community conservation movements.

The organization provides various support services including: technical assistance to conservancies; policy advocacy; monitoring and evaluation; and institutional strengthening. They work to coordinate conservation support while ensuring communities receive maximum benefits from wildlife and tourism.

Through NACSO’s coordination, Namibia’s CBNRM program has grown to encompass over 80 conservancies covering more than 160,000 square kilometers and benefiting over 200,000 rural residents. Their work has helped create one of Africa’s most successful conservation models while generating significant benefits for rural communities.

Maliasili exists to help talented local conservation organizations overcome their challenges and constraints so that they can become more effective agents of change in their landscapes, communities, and nations.
