Mwambao works to strengthen coastal communities’ capacity for marine resource management along Tanzania’s coast. Their approach combines traditional knowledge with modern conservation techniques to create effective, locally-led marine protection systems.
The organization implements various programs including: locally managed marine areas; sustainable fisheries development; mangrove restoration; and alternative livelihood initiatives. They work closely with coastal communities to develop and implement marine management systems that ensure both conservation success and community benefits.
Through their efforts, Mwambao has helped establish numerous locally managed marine areas, improved fishing practices in dozens of communities, and restored significant areas of mangrove forest. Their work has demonstrated effective approaches to community-based marine conservation while improving livelihoods for coastal residents.
