Mjumita is Tanzania’s national network for community-based forest management, working to strengthen local control and benefits from forest resources. Operating across multiple regions, they support communities in establishing and maintaining effective forest management systems while ensuring equitable benefit sharing.
Their programs encompass various aspects of community forestry including: policy advocacy; capacity building for local forest management; forest monitoring and protection; and development of forest-based enterprises. They work to strengthen community rights over forest resources while building local capacity for sustainable forest management.
The organization has helped establish and support hundreds of village forest management committees, protecting thousands of hectares of forest while improving local livelihoods through sustainable forest use. Their work has contributed significantly to Tanzania’s community forestry movement while demonstrating effective approaches to combining forest protection with poverty reduction.
