The Mali Elephant Project works to protect one of Africa’s most remarkable elephant populations that migrates across the vast Gourma region of Mali. Operating in an extremely challenging environment, they have developed innovative approaches to elephant conservation that integrate with and support local communities in this Sahelian landscape.
The project implements multiple integrated programs including: community-based natural resource management; anti-poaching initiatives; habitat protection; and sustainable livelihood development. Their unique approach brings together diverse ethnic communities to create shared systems for resource management that benefit both people and elephants.
Despite ongoing security challenges in the region, the project has successfully maintained the elephant population while helping communities develop more sustainable resource management systems. They have established community ranger networks, implemented sustainable land-use practices across vast areas, and created alternative livelihood opportunities that support conservation.
