KopeLion works to protect lions and promote human-wildlife coexistence in the greater Ngorongoro Conservation Area of Tanzania. Their innovative approach combines traditional Maasai practices with modern conservation techniques to protect both lions and livestock in this critical wildlife corridor.
The organization runs several key programs including: their Warriors for Wildlife initiative that employs former lion hunters as conservation officers; livestock protection and improvement programs; and community-based conflict mitigation systems. They work closely with local communities to develop practical solutions that enable pastoralists and predators to coexist.
Since its inception, KopeLion has achieved remarkable success in reducing lion killings, improving livestock protection, and building community support for conservation. Their work has helped maintain critical connectivity for lion populations while supporting traditional pastoralist livelihoods in one of East Africa’s most important wildlife landscapes.
