Proving Community Conservation can work in Tanzania →

Partner stage: Active
Region: East Africa

Honeyguide is a leading force in community-based conservation across northern Tanzania, working to protect some of East Africa’s most important wildlife populations and their habitats. Their approach focuses on making conservation economically viable for local communities while ensuring effective protection of critical ecosystems.

The organization implements comprehensive programs including: community ranger support and training; human-wildlife conflict mitigation; sustainable enterprise development; and conservation technology innovation. Their work combines traditional knowledge with modern conservation techniques to create effective, locally-led protection systems.

Through their efforts, Honeyguide has helped reduce poaching by over 90% in their project areas, significantly decreased human-wildlife conflict, and generated substantial conservation-based revenue for local communities. Their innovative approaches to ranger training and wildlife protection have become models for community conservation across East Africa.

Maliasili exists to help talented local conservation organizations overcome their challenges and constraints so that they can become more effective agents of change in their landscapes, communities, and nations.
