Environmental Rural Solutions (ERS) is a pioneering organization working in the Eastern Cape and KwaZulu-Natal regions of South Africa, focusing on integrated approaches to rural development and environmental restoration. Operating in some of South Africa’s most economically challenged rural areas, ERS combines innovative rangeland management with sustainable livelihood development to create lasting positive change.

The organization implements comprehensive programs that include: rangeland restoration and management; climate-smart agriculture; water resource protection; and sustainable livestock practices. They work closely with traditional leaders and local communities to revive indigenous knowledge systems and combine these with modern conservation techniques to improve both environmental and economic outcomes.

Since its establishment, ERS has successfully restored thousands of hectares of degraded rangeland, implemented water-smart farming techniques with hundreds of rural households, and established numerous sustainable enterprises. Their work has significantly improved livestock management practices, enhanced water security, and increased household incomes while contributing to climate resilience in vulnerable rural communities.
