Conservation Through Public Health (CTPH) is a pioneering organization that safeguards endangered mountain gorillas by improving the health and livelihoods of the communities living around Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, Uganda. Their groundbreaking approach recognizes that the health of wildlife, humans, and their shared environment are inextricably linked.
CTPH operates through three main program areas: wildlife health monitoring to prevent disease transmission between humans and gorillas; community health services including mobile clinics and health education; and sustainable livelihood initiatives that support conservation. Their unique Village Health and Conservation Teams integrate public health with wildlife conservation education at the grassroots level.
The organization has achieved remarkable success, contributing to the growth of the mountain gorilla population while significantly improving community health outcomes. They have trained hundreds of community health workers, dramatically reduced disease transmission between humans and gorillas, and helped develop sustainable enterprises that support conservation. Their model has been recognized globally as an innovative approach to integrated conservation and health.
