COMRED spearheads innovative approaches to marine resource management along Kenya’s coast, combining scientific research with community-based conservation initiatives. Their work focuses on developing sustainable solutions to the challenges facing coastal communities and marine ecosystems, from overfishing to climate change impacts.
The organization runs multiple integrated programs including: sustainable fisheries management initiatives that combine traditional knowledge with modern techniques; coral reef monitoring and restoration projects; and community-based marine protection efforts. They also conduct vital research on coastal ecosystems and support local communities in developing alternative livelihoods that reduce pressure on marine resources.
Since 2007, COMRED has successfully established several locally managed marine areas, trained hundreds of fishers in sustainable practices, and helped communities develop alternative income sources. Their research has contributed significantly to understanding East Africa’s coastal ecosystems, while their community programs have improved both marine conservation outcomes and local livelihoods.
