Communities Health Africa Trust (CHAT) pioneered an innovative approach to conservation by addressing the critical link between population health and environmental sustainability in northern Kenya. Operating across vast and remote landscapes, CHAT delivers essential healthcare services to communities living alongside wildlife, recognizing that improved human wellbeing is fundamental to successful conservation outcomes.
CHAT’s integrated programs combine mobile healthcare delivery with conservation education and family planning services. Their camel mobile clinics reach the most isolated communities, providing primary healthcare, family planning services, and HIV/AIDS prevention education. These medical outreach efforts are coupled with environmental awareness programs that promote sustainable resource use and wildlife conservation.
Since its inception, CHAT has significantly improved healthcare access for over 100,000 people across northern Kenya’s conservation areas. Their work has led to measurable improvements in both human health indicators and conservation outcomes in the regions they serve. By addressing basic healthcare needs, they’ve helped reduce pressure on natural resources and wildlife habitats while building community support for conservation initiatives.
