Carbon Tanzania is an impact-driven social enterprise that transforms forest conservation into economic opportunity through carbon markets. Working across multiple landscapes in Tanzania, they develop forest carbon projects that generate verifiable carbon credits while protecting some of East Africa’s most important forest ecosystems and supporting indigenous communities’ land rights and livelihoods.
Their approach combines scientific rigor with community engagement, focusing on three key areas: establishing and maintaining forest carbon projects that meet international standards; supporting community-led forest protection through benefit-sharing agreements and capacity building; and connecting these projects to global carbon markets. They work closely with indigenous communities, particularly the Hadza and Maasai, to ensure traditional forest management practices are integrated into their conservation model.
The organization has achieved significant impact across Tanzania, protecting over 450,000 hectares of threatened forest and woodland habitats. Their projects support more than 80,000 people through direct carbon revenue sharing and social development programs. They have successfully prevented the emission of millions of tonnes of CO2 while helping communities secure land rights and develop sustainable forest-based economies.
