The Green Belt Movement (GBM) is a pioneering environmental organization that empowers communities, particularly women, to conserve the environment and improve livelihoods through tree planting. Founded by Nobel Peace Prize laureate Wangari Maathai, GBM continues to drive positive environmental and social change across Kenya.
The organization implements comprehensive programs that include: widespread tree planting initiatives; watershed protection; climate change adaptation; and women’s empowerment through environmental stewardship. Their unique approach combines environmental conservation with advocacy for social justice, democratic governance, and sustainable development.
Over the decades, GBM has facilitated the planting of over 51 million trees in Kenya, protected critical water catchment areas, and empowered thousands of women through environmental conservation activities. Their work has significantly contributed to soil conservation, improved water security, and enhanced food production while building community resilience to climate change.
